The SA Men’s MTB XCO Championship was a tough ride and Alan Hatherley proving himself as a worthy SA Champion for 2019 having previously won the prestigious title several times in the past.

The 4.2KM Thaba Trails course was tough and dusty with steep ascents and knuckle white descents often testing the rider’s skill to stay on track but this did not deter Alan from clocking a fast paced time of 1:20:28 for the 6 laps beating 2nd place Jan Withaar by 59 secs.

Alan holds the World U23 Cross-country Championship title  having won the race at the 2018 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships.

The race for 2nd place between Jan Withaar and Philip Buys was closely contested with the tight course making overtaking difficult and, in the end, a 4 sec gap was all that separated the riders at the finish line.

His fastest lap time was 12:20 and in the women’s race the fastest alp time was 14:39

1. Alan Hatherly – 1:20:28
2. Jan Withaar – 1:21:27
3. Philip Buys – 1:21:31

Henry Liebenberg had a resounding win in the U23 race beating Julian Jessop by 1:40 secs winning in a time of 1:24:59
