The 2019 Cycling SA Cross Country Championship women’s elite race was held at the challenging Thaba Trails venue in Johannesburg on 20 July and produced some thrilling racing under windy and chilly conditions

Several the top SA rider were in action including Mariska Strauss, Candice Lill and Cherie Redecker competing for the SA title

The course was tough comprising of some tricky downhill sections including an awkward rock garden calling for pinpoint skills on this descent.

Laps one to three saw Candice taking the lead and setting the pace and dictating the race. On lap 4 Mariska took the lead and spectators were expecting her to beat Candice just like in the recent 2019 Mercedes Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series in a dry and dusty Vallnord, Andorra hold on 9 July where Mariska finished 20th and Candice 22nd

But it was not to be, and Candice took lead in the final lap holding on to this position to be crowned the SA Champ for the first time as an elite rider

In the U/23 race 18 year old Tiffany Hill took the SA Title proving she is a rising talent with a bright future
